86400: regarding the shepard fairey-izer, does this require certain software?

http://www.dubster.com/obamafy/

It does. It works with the Photo Booth application. It comes on every (recent) Mac, but if you’re a windows user, I think you may be out of luck.

Figures.

15 Word Illusions »

tristanjay7:

tristanjay7:

(via bebelestrange)

These are fun, but the commentary is silly. I don’t believe that “the brain is capable of processing the word “of”. I counted six f’s right away by not reading the words but rather looking at the letters. That doesn’t make me a genius.

Hahahah, I just looked at the pictures when I read it, so I missed the “NEWS FLASH: BRAIN CANNOT PROCESS ‘OF’” line. The real answer, as you no doubt know from linguistics, is that “of” is [əv] phonetically and most people only count the /f/s they hear. (Which in psycholinguistics suggests a triangular lexicon whereby spelling is decoded into sounds before being processed into meaning wooohooooo!)

I do remember hearing that somewhere. I take no claim for the explanations on that website :)

bitchville, it looks so beautiful there, I’d love to go someday.

And, on an unrelated note, I swear that I’m unfollowing anyone who jumps on the half-naked-self posting/reblogging bandwagon. puhleez.

Where'd your Tumblr name come from?

inothernews:

From my first Gawker screenname, which has to do with my past profession.

buyhercandy:

nighthawks:

thewayoftheworld:

kanamit:

Inspired by shetoldmesomemore’s post

The Kanamits is the name of an alien race that comes down to Earth “to serve man” on the classic Twilight Zone Season 3 episode of the same name.

“The Way of the World - A Story of Truth and Hope in an Age of Extremism” is the name of a book by Ron Suskind that I was reading at the time that greatly moved me. A heroic book of how America lost its way and relinguished its moral leadership during the post 9/11 Bush years as a result of the false premise underlying the Iraq war, Guantanamo, detention, rendition and torture, etc., etc. It’s a bold portrait of America told through the narrative of individuals testing America’s values. The truth and hope come from those people who are willing to stand up to authority (at often great cost) when that authority is morally wrong, regardless of what the law states.

That and I couldn’t think of anything else at the time. I always figured some better name would eventually present itself, but this grew on me and stuck around.

That is interesting! I am very intrigued by how people choose their usernames. I am currently writing an essay on embodiment, so I am thinking, “Why this username? What does it represent about the person”

“Nighthawks” is one of my favourite songs by the band Two Hours Traffic (whom I’ve talked incessantly about in my Tumblr). Whenever I need a screenname, I generally turn to song titles as a good source for inspiration. There is nothing better than someone recognizing a musical reference you’ve made; it is like making a connection with a kindrid spirit. I am very defined by the music I listen to, but unfortunately the most I can do in my general interactions with people is to wear a band shirt and hope that someone notices. “Nighthawks” was short, simple, and showed my love for one of my favourite bands.

Mine is after the Sleater-Kinney song, “Buy Her Candy”.

if i buy her candy / will she know who i am?

It’s an old Heart song and I am bebe le strange, especially on tumblr.

That was the saddest thing for Sybille: after twenty minutes you have got as far with these people as after half a year, as after many years, nothing more is added. - Max Frisch

———————-

“A student may easily exhaust his life in comparing divines and moralists, without any practical regard to morality or religion; he may be learning not to live, but to reason; he may regard only the elegance of style, justness of argument, and accuracy of method; and may enable himself to criticise with judgment, and dispute with subtilty, and while the chief use of his volumes is unthought of, his mind is unaffected, and his life is unreformed.”
Samuel Johnson: Rambler #87 (January 15, 1751)

———————-

“… songs, to me, were more important than just light entertainment. They were my preceptor and guide into some altered consciousness of reality. Some different republic, some liberated republic… whatever the case, it wasn’t that I was anti-popular culture or anything and I had no ambition to stir things up. I just thought of mainstream culture as lame as hell and a big trick. It was like the unbroken sea of frost that lay outside the window and you had to have awkward footgear to walk with.”
Bob Dylan (Chronicles: Volume One)

———————-

  • “I was never used to being happy, so that wasn’t something I ever took for granted. I did sort of think, you know, marriage did that. You see, I was brought up differently from the average American child because the average child is brought up expecting to be happy - that’s it, successful, happy, and on time.”
  • “I was a mistake. My mother didn’t want to have me. I guess she never wanted me. I probably got in her way. I know I must have disgraced her. A divorced woman has enough problems getting a man, I guess, but one with an illegitimate baby…. I wish, I still wish, she had wanted me.”
  • “No one ever told me I was pretty when I was a little girl. All little girls should be told they are pretty, even if they aren’t.” - Marilyn Monroe
